Riley was diagnosed with Lupus when she was only a few weeks old, and since then she has been to more doctors then you can imagine. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that not only affects your joints, but also attacks your organs.
Riley has an extremely rare case called Neonatal Lupus that is found in less than 1% of babies. This is a spot like rash that has taken over her entire body and has led her to having a few heart complications. Each month Riley sees her cardiologist to check for fluid buildup and inflammation around her heart and goes home where she is hooked up to her 24 hour heart monitor. At any point we could be told she will need to have a pacemaker put in. While the average heart rate for babies is in the 130-160 range, her heart beats closer to 200 beats per minute putting a strain on her heart.
Unfortunately there is no real path of treatment for this. She can either grow out of it, or she won’t. We won’t know until it happens.
Riley is the most mellow little baby whether it’s getting her blood drawn for the third time in one week, or being hooked up to countless wires and machines for testing and sonograms, she has giggled and smiled through it all!
Our hope is to help put an end to this vicious disease!
Our family, and our tiniest little warrior appreciates you!
