A TEAM WALKING IN MEMORY OF PAMELA SAYERS HJERPE
I know that it's last minute, but I am back home in Connecticut for a bit and I've decided to make a team to participate in this years Walk to End Lupus Now, on Saturday, October 16th.
Lupus is a mysterious and misunderstood autoimmune disease. It has no known causes or cures, with symptoms that can be severe and highly unpredictable. It is known as the "disease of one thousand faces" because it affects everyone differently and can damage any organ or tissue in the body.
Lupus has been a part of my life ever since I was a little girl - my mom was diagnosed and became our family's butterfly when I was 12 years old or so. I never knew the extent of the pain that it caused her because she never lead on, especially in the early years of her diagnosis. She was always busy being supermom and fought through the constant aches, fatigues, and body betrayals. These betrayals are something I have now come to better understand, as I have faced a year of health issues, eventually leading to my own diagnosis with lupus in early May of this year.
About two weeks after I became a lupus butterfly myself, my mom passed away from a long battle and a longer list of complications from the disease. She was a true lupus warrior and she had been our miracle. She never stopped fighting for us. It attacked her joints, her muscles, her bones, her blood, her heart, her lungs, her kidneys, her liver, her everything. She rarely complained, just asked for prayers, staying positive and giving all the love she could to us like always. I have a hundred questions I wish I could ask her. I wish I could learn more about her experiences and apply them to my own now. I know she's with me - I see her signs almost every day. I know she's now guiding me, protecting me, and helping me heal on my journey with lupus. I'm not afraid of this disease thanks to her fearlessness and strength.
In honor of my mom, and to support the Lupus Foundation of America, TEAM PAM, will be walking on October 16th. If you would like to donate just click the link in my bio. If you would like to walk, or even fundraise alongside me, please join my team through the same link. This is a virtual event, but I invite anyone who joins TEAM PAM to meet me at the Madison Surf Club on that Saturday at 9AM and we will walk Middle Beach Rd together.
Every dollar raised helps to find a cure and fills my heart with tons of gratitude.
