2020 Walk to End Lupus Now Connecticut - Hartford

Froot Lupus

Welcome to Team Froot Lupus's page!

Corinne's Story:

It has been 14 years since I was diagnosed with Lupus at the early age of 9. It comes with a complete package of other illnesses and health complications. It's a list that is so long, it almost sounds made up. I'll admit it, it's not easy. It affects me not only physically but emotionally and mentally as well.

If someone were to ask me to describe what it's like to live with a chronic illness, I honestly wouldn't know where to begin. You face these daily struggles that are happening on the inside while looking perfectly fine to everyone else on the outside. It's like you were drafted into this battle without a choice. So, you fight, taking any win you can get.

There is also this expectation of living a normal life and remaining active with drained out batteries. The times where I need to be 100% functioning, while running on 2% battery, sometimes end with me recuperating in bed for the next few days. The fact is, things don't always turn out the way you planned or the way you think it should. Every one of us is going through our own hardships, our own obstacles in life. We all have a choice whether to wallow in it or do what we can to make the best out of the situation.

Lupus has always been a huge part of my life and always will be. But it doesn't define who I am as a person or what I will accomplish in life. Day by day, I promised to take it easy on the things that have been causing me stress, always putting my health first. Looking back, my whole body, mental state, and life completely transformed the moment I decided to not let my illness control me. I feel stronger. I feel happier. I feel loved.

I joined this walk because it's important to educate and create awareness amongst family, friends, and the community of this disease many are affected by. I joined this walk for all those people out there who feel the chronic aches and pains but manage to keep going and live their best life. I joined this walk for me—for all my accomplishments thus far and for what's next. Even if it is uncomfortable to share these deep, dark parts of my life and my past, I feel so much purpose in sharing it with all of you.

Will you join our team and help us reach our fundraising goal? You’ll be supporting the Foundation's efforts to improve the quality of life for all people affected by lupus. You can also support by making a secure contribution on our walk page. Every single dollar counts!

  • Lupus symptoms can be severe and highly unpredictable and can damage any organ or tissue, from the skin or joints to the heart or kidneys.
  • While lupus can strike anyone at any time, 90% of people living with lupus are women. Women of color are at especially high risk.
