Hi, there!
Thanks for stopping by. My name is Keanna Mendoza. I am a Seattle native and your local Realtor®.
On January 25th, 2020, I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Nephritis. Lupus nephritis is one of the most serious complications of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the kidneys, leading to inflammation and possible organ damage. Inflammation of the kidneys can harm the ability of the overall renal (kidney) system to properly remove waste from the blood, maintain the correct amount of body fluids, and regulate hormone levels for controlling blood pressure and blood volume.
Lupus nephritis most often develops within five years from when lupus symptoms first appear. Symptoms include weight gain, swelling, increase in urination (especially at night), blood and foamy appearance in the urine, and high blood pressure. In its early stages, however, the symptoms of lupus nephritis can go unnoticed. If lupus nephritis is not treated symptoms can get worse and lead to kidney failure. People experiencing serious kidney complications like kidney failure may need either dialysis or a kidney transplant.
There are medications used to help control inflammation and reduce kidney damage like immunosuppressive drugs, corticosteroids, and even blood thinning supplements which has changed my body composition.
Living with SLE has changed my lifestyle, especially my diet. Eating out with friends and family can be a challenge at times. Since this SLE is autoimmune, I no longer consume gluten, soy, or dairy.
I am grateful for my powerhouse team of physicians that manages my lupus.
I am joining thousands of people across the country for the Walk to End Lupus Now®. I hope that you will join me either by lacing up your sneakers or by donating to my fundraising page.
You can make a difference by donating to help me reach my personal fundraising goal and support the Foundation's efforts to improve the quality of life for all people affected by lupus! A generous contribution of $25 or $55 can make a definite impact. What’s more, if your employer offers a Matching Gift Program to employees, you may be able to double your contribution with just a little bit of paperwork.
Trust me, it’s worth the effort! Every single dollar counts."
