On March 6, 2015 at 4:00pm, after five years of serious health issues which included a blood clot / rib removal / having zero blood platelets for almost a year / infusions every three weeks, my Son Chip had no idea his life was going to be changed forever ... he was diagnosed with systemic Lupus, a disease we knew absolutely nothing about. He had been admitted to the hospital with sever pain in his chest and after many hours of testing they found the cause was a build up of fluid in the sac surrounding his heart. He spent the next week in the hospital for more tests and doctors who were trying to determine the cause and with the help of his devoted hematologist, Dr. Michael Bar, enough “indicators” were finally identified to make the Lupus diagnosis. Not long afterward this incident, fluid began to also collect in the protective sac surrounding Chip's lungs which resulted in a series of very painful, pleural effusions.
Now, five years into his diagnosis, he continues to take what is a perfect cocktail of medications and receives chemotherapy every six months, which has kept him in remission the past two years. He is incredibly fortunate to have the most amazing medical team behind him ... Dr. Fotios Koumpouras, Dr. Michael Bar, Dr. Caroline Gulati, Dr. Stephen Bauer, Dr. Eric Brown, Dr. Edward Portnay and Dr. Richard Weber. We are so grateful for all they've done and continue to do for Chip's constent fight against Lupus.
My Niece Sami sent him an article, when he was first diagnosed, titled "The Spoon Theory". This is an accurate description of how Chip feels every day ... finally someone understood, someone knew the struggle and put it into words so his Family and Friends could understand. It's a long read but worth it if you have no idea the effect it has on a person living with Lupus.
