I'm Walking to End Lupus. Join Me?
Imagine a day when doctors can say, "There is a cure for lupus." Until that day though, there is work to be done. That's why I'm taking action in the fight against lupus. Join me as I participate in Lupus Foundation of America's Walk to End Lupus Now(R) to raise critical funds for the estimated 1.5 million people living with lupus in the United States.
It has been 14 years since I was diagnosed with Lupus at the early age of 9. It comes with a complete package of other illnesses and health complications. It's a list that is so long, it almost sounds made up. I'll admit it, it's not easy. It affects me not only physically, but every aspect of myself is affected.
If someone were to ask me to describe what it's like to live with a chronic illness, I honestly wouldn't know where to begin. You face these daily struggles that are happening on the inside, while looking perfectly fine to everyone else on the outside. It's like you were drafted into this battle without a choice. So, you fight, taking any win you can get. There is also this expectation of living a normal life and remaining active with drained out batteries. The times where I need to be 100% functioning, while running on 2% battery, sometimes ends with me recuperating in bed for the next few days. The fact is, things don't always turn out the way you planned or the way you think it should. Every one of us is going through our own hardships, our own obstacles in life. We all have a choice whether to wallow in it or do what we can to make the best out of the situation.
Lupus has always been a huge part of my life and always will be. But it doesn't define who I am as a person or what I will accomplish in life. Day by day, I promised to take it easy on the things that have been causing me stress, always putting my health first. Looking back, my whole body, mental state and life completely transformed the moment I decided to not let my illness control my life. I feel stronger. I feel happier. I feel loved.
I joined this walk because it's important to educate and create awareness amongst family, friends, and the community of this disease many are affected by. I joined this walk for all those people out there who feel the chronic aches and pains but manages to keep going and live their best life. I joined this walk for me, for all my accomplishments thus far and for what's next. Even if it is uncomfortable to share these deep, dark parts of my life and my past, I feel so much purpose in sharing it with all of you.
Will you make a donation to help me reach my personal fundraising goal and support the Foundation's efforts to improve the quality of life for all people affected by lupus? Any contribution can make a definite impact. Every single dollar counts.

* Lupus is a mysterious and misunderstood autoimmune disease. It strikes without warning, affects each person differently, and has no known causes or cure.
* Lupus symptoms can be severe and highly unpredictable and can damage any organ or tissue, from the skin or joints to the heart or kidneys.
* While lupus can strike anyone at any time, 90% of people living with lupus are women. Women of color are at especially high risk.
