Why I’m Walking to End Lupus.
Before January 2019, I never even heard of Lupus. I have never had anything more serious than a common cold. When my ankles swelled, we still never imagined anything serious. Because I have an amazing pediatrician, she quickly ran tests and determined that I should go straight to Children’s Hospital Boston. I was admitted to the hospital the first time to run tests and find out why, a seemingly healthy 17 year old, was in kidney failure. Lupus? What is Lupus? I soon learned all I could about this mysterious disease. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that strikes without warning and causes your own immune system to attack your healthy cells. There are no known causes for lupus, or a cure. Lupus symptoms can be severe and highly unpredictable and can damage any organ or tissue, from the skin or joints to the heart or, like in my case, kidneys. While lupus can strike anyone at any time, 90% of people living with lupus are women. Since my diagnosis I have learned that an estimated 1.5 million Americans, and at least five million people worldwide, have a form of lupus. Lupus symptoms vary from person to person and there are no two cases that are alike. A lot of the symptoms also mimic other illnesses. For this reason, the average time of diagnosis is 6 years. I consider myself lucky that I was diagnosed so quickly.
Imagine a day when doctors can say, “There is a cure for lupus.” Until that day though, there is work to be done. That’s why I’m taking action in the fight against lupus. Join me as I participate in Lupus Foundation of America’s Walk to End Lupus Now.
Will you make a donation to help me reach my personal fundraising goal and support the Foundation's efforts to improve the quality of life for all people affected by lupus? A generous contribution of $25 or $55 can make a definite impact. What’s more, if your employer offers a Matching Gift Program to employees, you may be able to double your contribution with just a little bit of paperwork. Trust me, it’s worth the effort! Every single dollar counts.
Together, we can solve the cruel mystery of lupus. Thank you for your generosity!
