I’m Walking to End Lupus. Join Me?
Imagine a day when doctors can say, “There is a cure for lupus.” Until that day though, there is work to be done. That’s why I’m taking action in the fight against lupus. Join me as I participate in Lupus Foundation of America’s Walk to End Lupus Now® to raise critical funds for the estimated 1.5 million people living with lupus in the United States.
One of those people is my daughter Kelly. Our journey started in mid February 2017, in her second semester of college. Kelly complained about discomfort in her abdomen. Thinking it was a muscle issue from a workout, we didn't pay it much attention....until the pain worsened and travelled down to her groin. This lead to doctor visits and referrals to specialists. Colonoscopy, Endoscopy, Gynecological exams, MRI, Xray all show nothing. Multiple visits to the emergency room followed that. Each time, everything normal. Talk about frustration. Finally on an ER visit we threatened to walk right back around to the hospital entrance if she was not admitted and further testing done. Now they are testing for Lymphoma..negative. Frustration beyond imagination. Kelly has withdrawn from college and the pain continues.
Finally in April 2017 a diagnosis of Lupus is confirmed and treatment starts.
Kelly has endured three spinal taps, two kidney biopsies, a lymph node biopsy, and painful EMG tests. She spent over 100 days in the hospital in 2017.
Fast forward to 2018... Kelly has re-enrolled in college after missing 3 semesters. She endures a new "normal" that includes Daily Pain, Daily Anxiety, Daily Fatigue, Insomnia along with a handful of medications every few hours. Her winter break includes visits to her Rheumatologist, Nephrologist and Primary care doctor.
I pray for a cure so those who suffer can find relief and so no one ever has to experience this awful disease.
