Check out this article explaining why I choose to fundraise for the Walk and be part of the Lupus Foundation of America:
Valley Central Schools- A Caring Community
When , a paraprofessional at , decided to raise awareness and dollars for the Lupus Foundation she found a great support system right at her workplace. Chanel, who was diagnosed with SLE in 2001, started by speaking with the school nurse about putting together a dress down day at their school. Very quickly the Principal and Administration gave their enthusiastic approval and worked with Chanel to make it a district-wide event involving all seven schools in the district. They sent a letter out to all of the schools to announce the dress down day and the lead office staff at each school collected the funds. A district-wide email was also sent to the staff and faculty and fliers were hung up in all of the hallways and classrooms around each building. Through these outstanding efforts, the school raised over $900. Chanel says, “It was very important to have my school community involved because lupus is something that no one really knows or talks about - as opposed to other diseases such as diabetes or cancer. I printed out one of the fliers off the Lupus Foundation of America’s website that explained what lupus is and who it affects and I put it in the faculty mailboxes. Once I put the flier out, many people came to me and said they had lupus or their loved ones had lupus which opened the door for additional conversation.”
Chanel will walk with Team Royalty at this fall’s at Chadwick Lake Park and you can join her by in October . Remember as you embark on your fundraising efforts, you don’t have to go it alone. The chances are that you have your own community at work, in your neighborhood or place of worship that can help support your efforts. Will you make a donation to help me reach my personal fundraising goal and support the Foundation's efforts to improve the quality of life for all people affected by lupus? A generous contribution of $25 or $55 can make a definite impact. What’s more, if your employer offers a Matching Gift Program to employees, you may be able to double your contribution with just a little bit of paperwork. Trust me, it’s worth the effort! Every single dollar counts.
Did you know?
- Lupus is a mysterious and misunderstood autoimmune disease. It strikes without warning, affects each person differently, and has no known causes or cure.
- Lupus symptoms can be severe and highly unpredictable and can damage any organ or tissue, from the skin or joints to the heart or kidneys.
- While lupus can strike anyone at any time, 90% of people living with lupus are women. Women of color are at especially high risk.
- Only one drug has ever been developed and approved by the US Food and Drug Administration specifically to treat the disease.
Together, we can solve the cruel mystery of lupus. Thank you for your generosity!
