I’m Walking to End Lupus. Join Me?
Imagine a day when doctors can say, “There is a cure for lupus.” Until that day though, there is work to be done. Lupus affects more than 1.5 million Americans, and I am one of those 1.5 million people. That’s why I’m taking action in the fight against lupus. Join me as I participate in Lupus Foundation of America’s Walk to End Lupus Now™.
Lupus is a mysterious and misunderstood autoimmune disease. It strikes without warning, affects each person differently, and has no known cause or cure. Lupus, personally affects my life because I have been suffering with this disease for many years. I have had symptoms for nearly a decade, and all the while doctors did not understand what my body was going through. There was finally a diagnoses in 2010. Lupus symptoms can be severe, highly unpredictable and can damage any organ or tissue, from the skin or joints to the heart or kidneys. Lupus has various types of symptoms and can mimic many other illnesses which is why the disease can be very difficult to diagnose. My symptoms were also not as “cookie cutter” as others. I never fit what doctors called the “normal” patterns or symptoms of many diseases. It was not until a long hospital stay where I became septic and met my team of doctors that a Lupus diagnoses was made. My symptoms ranged from nightly fevers, seizures, severe joint pain, pleurisy, infections, severe hearing loss, breathing problems, kidney issues, and much more.
This year has been particularly challenging for me with many set backs, flares lasting months, infections, and terrible side effects that have left possible permanent damage to my body. I have had to get used to a new way of life and change alot of my daily activities and routines. Most days are a struggle but I will never let the disease take control. This is why I am taking action this year more then ever to raise funds and walk for The Lupus Foundation of America.
